William "Bill" Myers Obituary

William O. Myers
June 11, 1948 – February 24, 2021

William “Bill” Orrin Myers, 72 of Monroe, passed away Wednesday, February 24, 2021 at home surrounded by his loving family after a brief battle with cancer.

Born June 11, 1948 in Monroe, he was the son of the late Arthur and Kathleen (Kenyon) Myers. He graduated from Jefferson High School in 1967. Bill served his country in the United States Army overseas in Vietnam. He married the love of his life, Lorna Brooks, on December 29, 1972 in Monroe. Together they raised two sons and one daughter: Jody, Joshua, and Rachel.

Bill graduated from the Wayne State Police Academy and went on to work as a decorated Monroe County Deputy Sheriff for 33 years before retiring in 2004. After retirement he worked an additional 15 years as the Chief of Security for Monroe County Community College. In addition to his official duties, Bill was the “Godfather” of the Bacchus Society.

Bill loved nothing more than to make people laugh, often at his own expense. His wit, affable personality, and renowned story telling made him the center of attention and always the life of the party. Bill savored yearly traditions such as taking his family to Florida in the spring and traveling to Pennsylvania for the annual Myers family reunion each summer. In his spare time, Bill enjoyed camping with his family in Northern Michigan, and was an avid and exceptional golfer. He always kept his clubs close in case an opportunity to play presented itself.

Bill was an original organizer of the Deputies’ Road Patrol Union in 1975, and he served as president of the Monroe County Deputy Sheriff’s Association union for twenty years. He was a member of the Deputy Sheriff’s Association of Michigan, the Police Officers Association of Michigan, the Fraternal Order of Police, and a lifetime member of VFW Post 1138. Bill earned the Deputy Sheriff of the Year award in 1998, was honored by the Exchange Club with their Officer of the Year award in 1999, and received the John Dankert Memorial Loyalty Award from the Police Officers Association of Michigan in 1999.

Bill leaves behind his loving wife Lorna of 48 years; three children: Jody (Shari) Myers, Dr. Joshua (Sheila) Myers, and Rachel Myers; six grandchildren: Jake, Jenna (Will Drake), Jude, William, Lucas, and Clare; and two sisters: Kathy (John) Tyrrell and Debra (Ken) Lake.

He is preceded in death by his parents.

Funeral services for Bill were private due to the ongoing public health emergency. Rev. Larry Detruf officiated. Burial and military honors were provided under the auspices of VFW Post 1138 at Roselawn Memorial Park, LaSalle. A public memorial celebration will be held on Bill’s birthday, June 11, 2021 at Dundee Golf Club where he was a longtime member. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that contributions in Bill’s honor be made to The Foundation at MCCC where the family is establishing a memorial fund.
