Rita M. VanDemark

Rita Margaret VanDemark, age 90 of Sylvania, OH, passed away on Tuesday, July 26, 2022 at The Grove at Oakleaf Village in Toledo, OH.

She was born on September 14, 1931 in Lima, OH, to the late Michael and Martha (Buckley) Monaghan. Upon graduating high school, Rita married the love of her life, Paul VanDemark, on May 29, 1950 in Indiana. They raised a family and spent over 68 wonderful years together before Paul’s passing in 2019.

Rita worked as a Payroll Accountant for 27 years at Michigan Gas and eventually retired in 1993. Rita was a member of St. Michael the Archangel Catholic Church for many years. She and Paul eventually moved to Anna Maria Island, FL in 1995 to enjoy their retirement. While in Florida, they attended St. Bernard’s Catholic Church in Holmes Beach. In her free time, Rita enjoyed Western Square Dancing for over 30 years.

To cherish her memory, Rita leaves two children: Dennis Vandemark and Jeff (Jackie) Vandemark; son-in-law, Patrick Patterson; nine grandchildren: Troy (Kristen) Payment, Timothy (Allison) Payment, Tara (Ryan) Adair, David (Erin) VanDemark, Chad (Jenny) VanDemark, Stacie (Christopher) Adams, Justin VanDemark, Jonathon VanDemark, and Jennifer (Joshua) Diroff; twelve great grandchildren: Jaydon Payment, Carson Payment, John Patrick Payment, Reilly Payment, Evan Payment, Derek VanDemark, Samantha VanDemark, Amanda (Nick) Garn, Brandon Ford, Kensleigh Adams, Liam Adams, Charlotte VanDemark, and Owen Diroff; one great-great grandson, Jaxson Garn; and a sister, Patricia Ann Goedde.

In addition to her husband and parents, Rita was preceded in death by her daughter Paula Kay Patterson; three infant sons and one infant daughter; a great-great granddaughter Amelia Ford; and brothers, Thomas Monaghan and John Monaghan.

Family and friends may visit from 1:00 to 7:00 pm at Rupp Funeral Home on Sunday, July 31, 2022. Rita will lie instate at 10:00 am on Monday, August 1, 2022 at St. Michael the Archangel Catholic Church, where a funeral mass will be held at 11:00 am. Fr. Ron Olszewski will officiate. Burial will immediately follow at St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery of Monroe.
