William “Bill” Underwood, passed away peacefully in his home on July 11, 2025, in Dundee, Michigan at the age of 75. Born on July 28, 1949, in Detroit, Michigan, William led a distinguished life and career dedicated to family and community, with his many passions marking his journey.
William was a proud graduate of Cass Technical High School, class of 1967, where he was a member of the ROTC. Following graduation, he enlisted in the United States Marine Corps and served from 1967–1972. William achieved the rank of Sergeant and served in the First Reconnaissance Battalion during the Vietnam War and was Honorably Discharged in 1973.
William pursued higher education with a commitment to justice and service, earning a Bachelor's degree in Criminal Justice from Wayne State University in 1981. He then served as a Senior Officer Specialist at FMC Rochester in Minnesota, and as a Lieutenant for the Federal Bureau of Prisons at the USP Atlanta Disturbance in Georgia, Federal Correction Institute Loretto in Pennsylvania, FCI Otisville in New York, and FCI Ashland in Kentucky.
William returned to Michigan and served at the FCI in Milan until 2000, when he retired from the Federal Bureau after a dedicated career. He furthered his education with a Master's degree in Criminal Justice from Marshall University in 2002, where he was a member of Omega Gamma, a chapter of Alpha Phi Sigma of the National Criminal Justice Honor Society. His Thesis titled ‘Cultural Awareness Sensitivity Training’ continues to be referenced by Marshall University Students to this day.
William continued to serve the community as a Unit Manager for the Corrections Corporation of America in McRae, Georgia, and as an Investigator at the Toledo Correctional Institution. With his many positions held, including some not mentioned, his professional life was truly a testament to his unwavering dedication, intelligence, and integrity.
A man of varied interests, William found solace and joy in hunting, fishing, swimming, sports, and spending time outdoors. A passionate Harley-Davidson rider, he cherished taking trips with his clubs, sharing camaraderie and adventure as a valued member of the Detroit Liberty Riders and Irish Hills Hog Chapter. He was a proud, avid, and often outspoken supporter of his children's sporting events, coaching in their early years and always present to cheer them on.
William was united in marriage with his beloved spouse, Melita Underwood, on June 23, 1998, at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Ozamiz, Philippines, a union that brought him immense happiness and companionship throughout the past 27 years.
He is preceded in death by his mother, Elaine Cogan, and his aunt, Mary Therese Daniels. He is survived by his devoted spouse, Melita Underwood (Dundee); his two children, Marie Elaine Underwood (Dundee), and William Michael Underwood (Dundee), who will forever cherish his love and memory.
Friends and family are invited to visit from 3:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. on Thursday, July 17, 2025, at Rupp Funeral Home, located at 2345 S. Custer Road, Monroe, MI 48161. William will lie in state at 10:30 a.m. on Friday, July 18, 2025, at St. Gabriel Catholic Parish - St. Irene Catholic Church, Dundee, where Mass of Christian Burial will follow at 11:00 a.m., celebrated by the church pastor, Rev. Fr. Christopher Muer. In accordance with his wishes, cremation will follow.
William “Bill” Underwood leaves behind a legacy of dedication, love, humor, and the enduring spirit of a life well-lived. His memory will be cherished by all who had the privilege of knowing him.
