December 17, 1920 – July 23, 2022

 

Walter Andrew Nordstrom, age 101, formerly of Monroe, passed away peacefully on Saturday, July 23, 2022, at the Swan Creek Assisted Living Facility of Toledo, OH.

Born December 17, 1920, in Grand Rapids, MI. He was the only child of the late Andrew and Sadie (Rasmus) Nordstrom. Walt graduated from Highland Park High School.  He continued his education at Lawrence Technological University and Detroit Business College.

Walter served his country during World War II in the United States Army.

Walter met his wife: Dorothy Clark at the Highland Park Congregational Church, where they were married on June 20, 1943. They honeymooned on the South American Steamer cruising on the Great Lakes. Once he returned from the service, they moved to Ferndale, where they raised their three sons: Thomas, Bruce, and James.  In 1985, they became snowbirds and split their time between Naples Florida and the Monroe area. They spent over 58 wonderful years together before Dorothy sadly passed away in 2001.

In 2002, Walter married his second wife: Ruth Ludke on December 22, 2002. They spent over seven years with each other before Ruth passed away in 2010. After her passing he found companionship with Ruth Whitney, an old family friend.

Walter was a drafting designer for Ford Motor Company’s Tractor Division retiring in 1980.

Walter was a talented musician. He played with several bands and orchestras including 20 years with the Monroe Community College Band, where he played the clarinet.  When in Naples, he was also a part of the Naples Concert Band from 1986 to 2007. In his free time, Walter enjoyed playing a game of golf or sailing. He was sharp witted till the end and lived a long happy life. He will be deeply missed and cherished in the hearts of his loved ones.

Beloved father of Bruce (Patricia) Nordstrom and James (Deborah) Nordstrom. Loving grandfather of Christina (Bryan) Nordstrom/Johnson, Andrew (Emily) Nordstrom, Charles (Dara O'Byrne) Nordstrom, Margaret (Justin) Kreimes, and David Nordstrom. Great grandfather of Dorothea, Liliana, Aiden, Ethan, Robert, Theodore, Ciera, and Cormac. Also survived by daughter in law: Martha Nordstrom, step grandchildren and step great grandchildren.

In addition to his parents, Walter was preceded in death by wives: Dorothy and Ruth Nordstrom; son: Thomas Nordstrom, and late in life companion: Ruth Whitney.

Everyone is invited to a visitation on Friday, July 29, 2022, at Rupp Funeral Home from 9:30 to 11:30 am. A funeral service will follow at 11:30 am, with Rev. Melodye VanOudheusden officiating. Burial will follow to White Chapel Memorial Cemetery in Troy, MI.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations in honor of Walter are suggested to St. Paul Methodist Church of Monroe.
