Walter E. Coury, age 87 of Monroe, passed away peacefully at 12:48 a.m. Friday, April 4, 2025, in his home, surrounded by his loving family.
Born March 11, 1938, in Cambridge, Ohio, he is the son of the late George and Susan (Prock) Coury. After moving to Monroe, in 1957, Walter met his beloved wife, Karen Jackson. Walter and Karen were married on August 10, 1963, at Trinity Lutheran Church, Monroe. Sadly, Karen preceded him in death on July 15, 2019. Walter’s first job was with C&O Railroad where he worked until an unfortunate injury would change his career path. He then worked for seventeen years as a mechanic at Peck’s Union 76. Later in life Walter found enjoyment and a sense of community service working for Jim’s Towing as a Wrecker Driver.
For more than seventy years, Walter was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church. He enjoyed woodworking, watching westerns, and most of all spending time with his family. Walter especially cherished time spent with his grandchildren. He will forever be remembered for his quick wit, sense of humor, and willingness to help those in need.
To cherish his memory, Walter leaves three children: Robert (Jennifer) Coury, Lee-Anne (Alan) Brown, and Ronald (Jennifer) Coury, all of Monroe; nine grandchildren: Alaric (Taylor) Coury, Jacob (Cheyenne) Schmidt, Jeremiah (Kendall) Schmidt, Sebastian Coury, Kaylee MacDonald, Jesse ( Jennifer) Schmidt, Jared (Allysen) Schmidt, Aiden Coury and Anna Coury; and thirteen great-grandchildren: Sawyer, Sophia, Izabella, Oaklynn, Aida, Harper, Remington, Marisa, Liam, Harlan, Kaiser, Roy, and Jeremiah Junior.
In addition to his parents and wife, Karen, Walter was preceded in death by five siblings: Betty “Liz” Laisure, Helen M. Coury, Jeanette Coury, George “June” Coury, and Raymond Coury.
