Velerian E. Bastien, age 94, passed away at home surrounded by his loving family on October 28, 2021.

Born on February 14, 1927, in South Rockwood, Michigan, Velerian was the son of the late Caesar A. and Anna E. (Dube) Bastien. He attended and graduated from Hillsdale High School where he met the love of his life, Delores. Velerian and Delores got married on June 8, 1946, in Angola, Indiana. They raised a family of five children and spent over 52 wonderful years together before Delores’ passing in May of 1999. Velerian made his living working at F.W. Ritter and Sons Pottery in South Rockwood for many years.

Velerian was a longtime member of St. Charles Catholic Church in Newport. When he moved up north, Velerian became a member of St. Mary Cathedral in Gaylord, Michigan. His favorite place to be was up north at his cabin. Velerian enjoyed gardening as he loved watching things grow. He also enjoyed woodworking, taking morning walks, riding his three-wheeler, cutting the grass on his tractor, and fishing in his own unique way. Velerian was a hard worker and he loved his family immensely.

To cherish his memory, Velerian leaves his children: Darlene F. (Ronald) Hoffman of Washington State, Carolyn Bastien of Saginaw, Texas, James V. (Rhonda) Bastien of Spring Creek, Nevada, and Margureite (Donald) LaSage of Newport; 15 grandchildren; several great grandchildren and great-great grandchildren; sibling, Everitt Albert Bastien; and son-in-law, Dan Erb.

In addition to his parents and wife, Velerian is preceded in death by a daughter, Verna J. Bastien Erb, and 10 siblings.

In accordance with Velerian’s wishes cremation has taken place. Family and friends may visit from 12:00 to 7:00 pm on Sunday, November 14, 2021, at Rupp Funeral Home, where a memorial service will be held that evening at 7:00 pm. Fr. Henry Rubello will officiate. Burial of cremated remains will take place at St. Charles Cemetery in Newport at a later date.
