Varnum C. “Dutch” Eby
August 29, 1924 – September 24, 2021
Varnum Charles “Dutch” Eby, age 97, passed away the morning of Friday, September 24, 2021, at Wellspring Lutheran Services of Monroe.
Dutch was born on August 29, 1924, in Maybee. He was one of six children born to the late Philp and Mary (Miller) Eby. Dutch made a living working at Ford Motor Company. He worked as a production technician at the Monroe plant for 30 years before retiring in 1980.
On October 6, 1962, Dutch married the love of his life, Sylvia Earl, at St. Patrick Church in Carleton. They spent 30 wonderful years together before Sylvia’s passing in 1992.
Dutch was a member of St. Patrick Church in Carleton. When he moved up to Hale, MI, Dutch became a member at St. Pius Catholic Parish. He was also a member at the Eagles Lodge in Hale. Dutch was an avid outdoorsman. He could often be found deer hunting and fishing. He even taught his grandchildren how to hunt. Dutch also enjoyed bowling, golfing, playing cards, and especially playing Cribbage with his great grandson.
To cherish his memory, Dutch leaves his grandchildren: Frank (Teresa) Nadeau, Jr. of Petersburg, Michael Nadeau of Florida, Scott Nadeau of Lambertville, Jon (Patricia) Nadeau of Carleton, and Brenda Boudrie of Lima, OH; 10 great grandchildren; many great-great grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Along with his wife and parents, Dutch is also preceded in death by his stepchildren: Sylvia Liedel, Virginia Karst, and Edward Bondy; a great-great grandson; brothers: Walter, Russel, and Rufus “Jim” Eby; and sisters: Ruth Saul and Rita Marshall.
Family and friends may visit on Tuesday, September 28, 2021, at Rupp Funeral Home from 4:00 to 8:00 pm where a rosary service will be held that evening at 7:00 pm. A funeral mass will be held the following day, Wednesday, September 29, 2021 at Divine Grace Parish in Carleton. Dutch will lie in-state at 10:00 am with a funeral mass beginning at 11:00 am. Fr. Robert Nalley will officiate. Burial will follow at St. Patrick’s Cemetery.
