Simon Steeley Vanderpool
April 7, 1945 – April 14, 2025
Simon Steeley Vanderpool, age 80 of Monroe, passed away peacefully at 3:20 p.m. Monday, April 14, 2025, at Hospice of Northwest Ohio Ebeid Center, Sylvania, Ohio. He had been in declining health since August.
Born April 7, 1945, in Corbin, Kentucky, he is the son of the late Simon and Laura (Canada) Vanderpool. Simon graduated from Corbin High School in Kentucky, a short time later he joined the United States Air Force. While stationed in Kokomo, Indiana, Simon met Aloah Dodd. The two would marry on December 27, 1963, at Macedonia Christian Church in Kokomo, Indiana; sadly, she preceded him in death on August 17, 2021. After serving his country honorably during the Vietnam War, he and his wife would return to Corbin, Kentucky, where he began to hear of the wonderful job opportunities offered in Michigan. Simon decided he would move his family to Monroe, finding a job at Ford Motor Company. He worked at the Monroe Plant as the Maintenance Supervisor until his retirement in 1995.
Simon enjoyed working with his hands, often building things, putting things together, and working on his tractors. In the 1970’s, Simon had his pilot’s license and spent many hours in his plane flying. He also raised Angus cattle which he sold to local stores for beef. Most of all, Simon loved his family. He will be deeply missed by all those who knew and loved him.
To cherish his memory, Simon leaves his daughter, Cheryl (Don) Duncan of Monroe; companion, Hilda McCutcheon; four grandchildren: Lisa, Lindsay (Logan), Laura and Michaela; and four great-grandchildren.
In addition to his parents and wife, Simon was preceded in death by one son, Simon Michael “Mike” Vanderpool; and three sisters.
Family and friends may visit from 11:00 a.m. until 1 p.m. Saturday, April 19, 2025, at Canada Town Church in Williamsburg, Kentucky, where services celebrating his life will begin at 1:00 p.m. He will be laid to rest next to his wife at Canada Town Cemetery, Williamsburg, Kentucky, immediately following services.
