Sandra Jean “Sandy” Smith

Sandra Jean “Sandy” Smith, age 83, of Monroe, passed away peacefully with her family at her side at 12:26 a.m. Thursday, May 16, 2024, at Elderly Solutions Assisted Living.

Born August 7, 1940, in Trenton, Michigan, she was the daughter of the late Frank and Anniemae (Saunders) Baggett. Sandy attended Trenton High School, graduating with the class of 1959. She married Karl O. Smith on October 3, 1959, at Good Shepherd Church in Flat Rock, Michigan. Sadly, he preceded her in death on December 22, 2017.   She was a lifelong homemaker and longtime member of the Monroe County chapter of the Order of the Eastern Star. Sandy loved attending her children and grandchildren’s sporting and school events. She also enjoyed traveling with her husband, cherishing their special trips to Aruba and Cocoa, Florida.

To cherish her memory, Sandra leaves two children, Gordon (Lynn) Smith of Monroe and Susan (Scott) Baltrip of South Rockwood; one sister, Lyndia Brillowsky; six grandchildren: Patrick (Yvonne) Hammack, Ryan (Julie) Smith, Kimberly (George) Rodriguez, Melissa Baltrip, Matthew Strimpel, Jennifer (James) Murphy; and eleven great-grandchildren: Johnny, Carter, Kaitlyn, Grant, Ava, Jack, Max, Leo, Eliza, Nora, and Jameson.

In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by one sister, Shirley Mordt and three brothers: Ray, Earl and Larry Baggett.

Family and friends may visit from 1 p.m. until 7 p.m. Thursday, May 23, 2024, at Rupp Funeral Home, 2345 S. Custer Road, Monroe, MI 48161, where services celebrating her life will be held at 11 a.m.  on Friday, May 24, 2024. Rev. Larry Detruf will officiate. In accordance with her wishes, cremation will follow, and she will be laid to rest next to her husband at Roselawn Memorial Park, LaSalle.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions in Sandy’s memory are suggested to Monroe County Special Olympics area 34.
