Ronald R. VanDorn

October 5, 1940 – December 1, 2025

 

Ronald Ralph VanDorn, age 85 of Petersburg, passed away suddenly on Monday, December 1, 2025, at the ProMedica Toledo Hospital.

Born on October 5, 1940 in Toledo, Ohio. Ron was the son of the late Ralph Arthur Van Dorn and Beulah Catherine Ford (Floyd) Lajiness. Ron graduated from Monroe High School in 1958. He later continued his education at Monroe Community College to receive his associate degree in science. In his younger years, he rode horses and competed in calf roping at the rodeo. In 1978, he became state champion in calf roping.

Ron married the late Mary (Dorner) Penley in 1965. Together they had a daughter and spent 18 years together. Ron later met Debra Stults, and they have been together ever since. Over 44 years, they were loving companions and each other’s life partner.

Ron was a long-time member of the Carpenters Local 512 Union of Ann Arbor. He worked in the union for many years as well as being self-employed before retiring.

Ron was an avid deer hunter and enjoyed going up north with friends during the season. He also liked to go to any sale events or auctions. Ron always loved to find a good bargain. He spent his winters in Fort Meyers, Florida as a snowbird.  Ron will be deeply missed by all who knew him and will be cherished in the hearts of his loved ones.

Beloved father of Patty Jo-VanDorn (Michael) Thompson. Loving grandfather of Mary Mikayla (Richard Miles) Thompson. Great grandfather of Richard Michael Miles. Stepbrother of Harl “Butch” Lajiness.  Also survived by his life partner, Debra Stults.

In addition to his parents, Ron was preceded in death by a sister, Sandra Jean (Jim) Baker; and stepsister, Ann Brown.

In accordance with the family’s wishes, cremation has taken place. A memorial gathering will be held on Saturday, December 6, 2025, at Rupp Funeral Home from 1 pm until the time of service starting at 3 pm. Officiating is Rev. Larry Detruf.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to The Monroe Senior Center.
