Mary McMullen

October 15, 1925 – November 25, 2021

Mary Theresa (Willaert) McMullen, age 96 of Monroe, passed away Thursday, November 25, 2021 after a brief illness. 

She was born October 15, 1925, the daughter of the late Maurice and Adeline (DeClerq) Willaert.  She married Robert McMullen on January 27, 1945 at March Air Force Base in Riverside, California.  Mary lived her entire life in Monroe and was a graduate of St. Mary Academy and was a life member of St. Mary Catholic Church.  During World War II, Mary worked as a supervisor for Monroe Auto Equipment Co, inspecting ammunition.  After the family was raised, Mary worked in the library at Cantrick Middle School.

Mary was an avid reader and enjoyed reading biographies and history books about World War II. She also enjoyed painting, discussing the news of the day, researching family Genealogy, and following the stock market.  Mary traveled extensively throughout the world and flew the Concorde from New York to London. Most of all, Mary loved to care for her family and most recently, spending time with her two youngest great-grandchildren, Madeline and Benjamin Ferdin, who loved their "granny".

Mary was preceded in death by her husband Robert, her parents Maurice and Adeline, her sister Marian, and great-great grand-daughter, Gracie Waller.

Survivors include her children, Karen Waller of Monroe, Michael (Nadine) McMullen of Newtown Square, PA, Jeanne Chapel of Ann Arbor, Patrick (Socorro) McMullen of Daytona Beach, FL, and Maureen (Michael) Romanowski of New Boston.  Mary is also survived by her grandchildren, Kari McMullen, Karla McMullen, Kristen Whaley, Anne Waller, Tami Livingood, Terri Prather, Marcee McMullen, Sean McMullen, and Michael Romanowski II; eleven great-grandchildren, one great-great grandchild, her sister Mariette (Roland) Burnard of Monroe, and several nieces and nephews.

Visitation will be at Rupp Funeral Home, Monroe on Thursday, December 2nd from 10:00 to 11:00 a.m. with funeral liturgy starting at 11 a.m. Burial will be at St. Joseph's cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in memory of Mary McMullen to St. Judes Hospital.
