August 27, 1953 – February 11, 2021

 

Lawrence Arvin Barstad Jr., age 67 of Newport, passed away peacefully with his family by his side on Thursday, February 11, 2021, at home under hospice care.

Born August 27, 1953 in Detroit, he was one of eight children of the late Lawrence A. and Aretta (Pike) Barstad, Sr. After school, Larry owned his own store called Alpha Gifts in Monroe. It was a Christian Gift Shop for the Monroe community for over 20 years.

On May 10, 1974, Larry married the love of his life, Sheila Carey. Together they raised four children and spent over 46 wonderful years together. In their free time, they enjoyed traveling together, going on many cruises to many different places.

Most importantly, Larry liked spending his quality time with his family, especially his grandkids. Larry will be deeply missed and cherished in the hearts of his loved ones.

Beloved husband of Sheila Barstad. Loving father of Sandy (Daniel) Bruce, Eric (Lana) Barstad, Christa (Joshua) Thomas, and Paula (Christopher) Friedrick. Dearest grandfather of Selena, Adriana, Pippa, Sawyer, Liliana, Alison, Myra, Rhett, Maverick, Rose, Addie, Bryella, and Kendyll. Larry also has one great-grandchild on the way: Olivia. Dear brother of Clay (Carol) Barstad, Delbert (Shirley) Gentile, Charlotte (Richard) Moskaitis, Barbara (Bob) Verriest, Brenda (Bob) Brown, and John (Debbie) Barstad.

In addition to his parents, Larry is preceded in death by his sister Donna (Jim) Guess and a loving grandson, Damon Austin.

Funeral services have been entrusted to Rupp Funeral Home. A funeral Mass for Larry will take place on Monday, February 15, 2021 at St. Charles Catholic Church in Newport with Fr. Henry Rebello officiating. Larry will lie instate from 9:30am till the funeral mass beginning at 10:30am. Following the funeral mass, entombment will take place at Our Lady of Hope Cemetery in Brownstown, Michigan.

In lieu of flowers, donations in Larry’s memory may be made to St. Anne’s Food Closet, 2420 North Dixie Hwy. Monroe, MI 48162.
