John S. Carter
September 14, 1929 - December 21, 2020
John Sylvester Carter, age 91 of Monroe, passed away on Monday, December 21, 2020 at ProMedica Monroe Hospital after a brief illness. His wife and daughter were by his side.
He was born on September 14, 1929 in Monroe to Shelby and Allie (Herrell) Carter. John attended Lincoln High School and Monroe High School. He proudly served two years in the United States Marine Corp, from 1946 to 1948, at Parris Island, Camp Lejeune, and the Washington, DC Marine Barracks. He attained the rank of corporal.
On April 23, 1955, John married the love of his life, Roxie A. Tinnel, in Angola, Indiana. Together, they raised one daughter, Cheryl.
John worked at River Raisin and Consolidated Paper before joining the Monroe Police Department in October of 1962. He went from patrolman, to desk sergeant, to lieutenant before retiring in April of 1987.
John had many interests in his life. He enjoyed fishing with a bow when he was a young man, riding his motorcycle in later years, and being able to solo fly in a small plane. John mostly enjoyed spending time with family. In the fifties and sixties, John would take home movies of his family in Monroe, Roxie's siblings and their children in Tennessee, and other relatives visiting from Ohio and Indiana. He loved to laugh, tell jokes and outrageous stories to his young nieces and nephews. John will be sorely missed.
To cherish his memory, John leaves his loving wife of over 65 years, Roxie Carter; daughter, Cheryl Carter; brother, Joseph Carter of Southgate; brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Thomas and Betty Tinnel of Milan, Ohio; and numerous nieces and nephews.
John was preceded in death by his parents; brothers: Shelby and Maurice; sisters: Ruby Withrow and Charlene Hatcher; and two infant sisters: Maire and Pauline.
A special thanks to the staff at ProMedica Monroe Nursing and Rehab and to the doctors and nurses in the ICU of Monroe ProMedica Regional Hospital.
