John Joseph Black, DVM, a beloved husband, father, grandfather, and dedicated veterinarian, passed away peacefully at his home on March 22, 2026, surrounded by his loving family. Born on May 4, 1946, in Detroit, Michigan, John lived a life marked by compassion, humor, and a deep love for animals. He was 79 years old.
John graduated from Mumford High School in 1965 and went on to earn his Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree from Michigan State University in 1969, a testament to his lifelong passion for animal care. His career began in Monroe, Michigan, where he worked alongside Dr. Harold Knirk before owning and operating the Monroe Veterinary Clinic from 1975 until his retirement in 2008. John's dedication to his profession and community was evident in his volunteer work for local animal shelters, where he devoted countless hours offering services to animals in need.
Beyond his professional accomplishments, John was known for his love of his “non-fishing fishing trips” with friends throughout Michigan, often stopping for a burger and a beer along the way. A huge fan of Michigan State Football, he could often be found cheering on his team with great enthusiasm. John was also a prankster with a great sense of humor, bringing joy and laughter to those around him.
John was preceded in death by his parents, John J. and Mary L. (Geiger) Black, his mother-in-law, Mary Ewert, and his brother-in-law, Samuel Lucio.
