James E. Baltrip

May 13, 1920 – February 15, 2024

James Edward Baltrip passed away on February 15, 2024, at 11:15 AM with his loving family surrounding him at his home in Monroe, Michigan, at the age of 103.

He was born on May 13, 1920 in Lone Mountain, Tennessee, the oldest of five sons and one daughter born to Alonzo Kenneth Baltrip and Laura (Keaton) Baltrip.

James was a World War II Disabled American veteran. He served with the 1st Army, 186th FA (Field Artillery) Battery D. He was a survivor of Omaha Beach in Normandy France, Battle of the Hedge Rows (Falise Pocket), the Battle of Saint Lǒ, in southern France, the Liberation of Paris and Belgium, Battle of the Bulge, Hürtgen Forest, 3 miles east of the Belgian-German border.

James Baltrip and Louise Lester first met in New Tazewell, Tennessee. He was smitten and fell head-over-heels. He claimed she looked like the movie star Esther Williams. Upon his return from the European Theatre World War II, he married Louise on October 27, 1945.

In 1946, their first child (Judy Baltrip) was born in Tazewell Tennessee. The following year the family moved to Monroe, Michigan.

James worked as a triple journeyman (Welder, Millwright, and Pipefitter) for 35 years at Union Camp Paper Company retiring in 1982.

James was a member and one of the original Deacons of Lakeside Missionary Baptist Church. He loved fishing, especially on Norris Lake, reading his Bible, and telling people about Jesus.

He was preceded in death by his mother and father, five brothers, William, Kenneth, Earl, Boyd and Glenn Baltrip and sister Gladys Horne, daughter Judy Daniels and son-in-law Hoye Daniels.

He is survived by his wife of 78 years, Louise (Lester) Baltrip, a son Edward Lyn Baltrip and daughter-in-law Cheryl Baltrip, grandchildren Kim (Don) Hoppert, Todd (Sheila) Daniels, Jennifer (Rev. David) McGregor, and Zachary (Erin) Baltrip.

Great grandchildren are Liliana and Ivy Louise Baltrip, Shade Daniels, Madilynn Daniels, Todd (Chelvia) Hoppert, Katie (Steven) Bordine ,Kayla (Matt) Burchel, and Hunter, Connor and Landon Mc Gregor, and great great grandchildren Mykennah, Sophia and Georgia Hoppert, Barrett “Bear” Bordine, Tallen, Vayda, Daxton and Rozalee Burchell. 

Family and friends may visit on Monday, February 19, 2024, at Rupp Funeral Home from 10 am until 12 pm. A funeral service in his honor will take place at 12 pm with Rev. Larry Head and Rev. David Mc Gregor officiating. James will be laid to rest immediately following at Roselawn Memorial Park in LaSalle.
