Gary Freeman McNeil, age 83, of Monroe, Michigan, passed away peacefully at 2:24 a.m. on Wednesday, June 25, 2026, at ProMedica Monroe Regional Hospital.

Born on February 19, 1943, in Monroe, Michigan, Gary was the son of the late Foster and Dallas "Mert" (Adkins) McNeil. He graduated from Monroe High School with the Class of 1961, where he excelled in track and field. He proudly served his country in the United States Army before beginning a long career with Ford Motor Company. A dedicated line worker, Gary retired in 2004 after thirty-eight years of service. He was also a proud member of UAW Local 723.

On December 20, 1997, Gary married Rita Turner in Las Vegas, Nevada. Sadly, she preceded him in death on March 4, 2010. He was also preceded in death by his parents; sons, Gary F. McNeil Jr. and Matthew T. McNeil; daughter, Brandie S. McNeil; grandson Richard “Chopper” McNeil Jr.; and brother, Lawrence McNeil.

Gary leaves behind a loving family who will cherish his memory, including his children: Richard (Marie) McNeil, Brian (Lori) McNeil, Michael (Missy) McNeil, Jason (Donna) McNeil, Kristie Boring, and stepsons Derrek Leach and Dustyn Leach. He is also survived by 14 grandchildren, many great-grandchildren, and numerous extended family members and friends.

Gary found great joy in spending time with his family. He was an avid outdoorsman who especially enjoyed bow hunting with his sons and grandsons. He also loved golfing and was proud to have won the Beer Can Open tournament alongside his son, Richard. During the 1980s and 1990s, Gary played on a championship-winning softball team, creating many lasting friendships and fond memories.

Family and friends may visit on Wednesday, July 1, 2026, from 12:00 noon until 1:00 p.m. at Rupp Funeral Home, 2345 South Custer Road, Monroe, MI 48161. Funeral services celebrating Gary's life will begin at 1:00 p.m. with Pastor B.J. McDaniel officiating.

Burial will follow at Roselawn Memorial Park, LaSalle, with military honors under the auspices of V.F.W. Post 1138, Monroe.

Gary will be remembered for his quiet strength, unwavering love for his family, his service to his country, and the many lives he touched throughout his 83 years. His legacy of hard work, devotion, and kindness will live on in the hearts of all who knew and loved him.
