Edwin Duane Sobota

Edwin Duane “Ed” “Cork” Sobota, age 79, of Petersburg, passed away unexpectedly at his home on Thursday, December 14, 2023 at 5:07 p.m.
Born May 7, 1944 in Monroe, he was the son of the late Joseph and Rosemary J. (Heck) Sobota. Ed attended Monroe High School, graduating with the class of 1962. He served his country honorably in the United States Navy during the Vietnam War from 1963-1967. After returning home, Ed married Ruby Sobota on November 7, 1970. Even though the two would later separate, they remained close friends until his passing. He supported his family as a truck driver, working for Jones Transfer for twenty-five years and R & R Drummonds for fifteen years, retiring in 2008. After his retirement, Ed moved up north for several years, later returning to Monroe to be closer to his family.
Ed was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars and a life-long NRA member. He enjoyed hunting and cherished spending time razzing his family. Ed was deeply loved by his family and will be missed by all who knew and loved him.
Two cherish his memory, Ed leaves five children: Billy (Karrie) Sobota, Gregory (Ellen) Sobota, Kevin (Keri) Sobota, Cassinda Miller, and David (Michell) Sobota; two brothers, Rick, and Mike Sobota; twenty grandchildren; and thirty-two great-grandchildren.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one sister, Cindy Sobota.
Memorial visitation will be held from 5 p.m. until 8 p.m. on Friday, January 12, 2023 at Rupp Funeral Home, 2345 S. Custer Road, Monroe, MI 48161, where military honors will be conducted at 7 p.m. under the auspices of V.F.W. Post 1138, Monroe.
