Edward G. Gates
September 2, 1948 – May 1, 2026
Edward Grover Gates, age 77 of Carleton, passed away suddenly on Friday, May 1, 2026, at the Henry Ford Detroit Hospital with family by his side.
Born September 2, 1948, in Monroe. Ed was the son of the late Edward and Emily (Berry) Gates. He was a graduate of Airport High School.
Ed met and married the love of his life, Karen Davis, on August 5, 1977 and raised one son together. Both enjoyed traveling and even visiting all the lighthouses on Michigan’s coast. They spent over 47 wonderful years together before Karen sadly passed in 2024.
Ed worked at Sysco Corporation in the maintenance department. He ended up retiring from the Canton location in 2015 after many years of dedicated service.
Ed was a member of the Faith United Methodist Church of Monroe, Michigan. He liked to be outside and work in his garden as well as building birdhouses in his spare time. Ed loved to go out to eat and indulge in ice cream. You could find him driving around on his golf cart with his dog, Molly by his side.
Most importantly, he spent quality time with his family, especially his grandsons. He was always there at their sporting events and extracurricular activities to cheer them on. Ed will be deeply missed and cherished in the hearts of his loved ones.
To cherish his memory, he leaves his son, Loyd (Sarah) Gates; 5 grandsons, Corben (Kylie), Caden, Kylar, Dylan, and Rykar; great granddaughter, Ashlyn; sisters, Janet (Gene) Mullins and Judy (Gerard) Verhille; beloved dogs, Molly, Baylor, and Snoop; a host of nieces and nephews; and many cherished friends.
In addition to his parents, Ed was preceded in death by wife, Karen; and great nephew, Noah Baker.
Friends and family are invited to a visitation on Friday, May 8, 2026, at Rupp Funeral Home from 10 am until the time of service starts at 1 pm. Pastor Katie Waggoner will officiate. Burial will follow to Roselawn Memorial Park, LaSalle.
