Marie Bowman was born February 5, 1923 to Wilbur and Louisa (Trouten) Coss in Bridgeport, OH – just across the Ohio River from Wheeling, West Virginia.
On November 18, 1940, she married J. Eugene Bowman in Napoleon, Ohio. Ceremony performed by the Rev. Roy B. Leedy. Sadly, he passed on April 16, 2018.
In April 1935, at the age of 12, she joined the First Presbyterian Church of LaSalle where she was an active member her entire life. Marie was an ordained Elder and served several terms on the Board of Session. She served on the Board of Trustees, was a Sunday School teacher, and Sunday School Superintendent for two years. She was director of Vacation Bible School for three years and also the craft teacher. She served as Sunday School secretary for about 30 years. Her love of music included singing in the church choir and directing it for several years.
One of her biggest joys in the church was being an active member of the ladies group, the Earnest Workers Society, joining in 1941. She served many times as its president, vice president, and secretary. Marie actively worked on different committees, including the ‘Mission Committee,’ which assisted needy families throughout the year. Marie served as Deputy Treasurer of LaSalle Township for 14 years (1961-1975) during the terms of Treasurer Claude J. Cousino, her step-father. She also served on Election Boards for several years.
