June 3, 1943 – June 26, 2024

Cynthia Joy Mayes, age 81 of Monroe, passed away the morning of Wednesday, June 26, 2024, at the ProMedica Regional Hospital of Monroe.

Born June 3, 1943, in Monroe. Cyndi was the daughter of the late Reaford and Letta (Chanter) Ryan. Cyndi graduated from Monroe High School in 1961. She then continued her education at Monroe Community College, Eastern Michigan University, Michigan University, and Michigan State University. She ended up completing multiple degrees, including a Masters. 

Cyndi met and married the love of her life: Harold Ward Mayes Sr. on April 21, 1962 in Monroe. They raised a family and loved traveling up north to their cabin in Grayling, MI. They spent over 44 wonderful years together before Harold sadly passed away in 2006. 

Cyndi was a Special Education Teacher for the Monroe County Intermediate School District (ISD). She taught autistic children for 26 years. Cyndi was also a big part of the Special Olympics. 

In her free time, she enjoyed sewing, eating good food, shopping, and dancing to 50’s music. Cyndi will be remembered for her generosity towards others. Most importantly, she loved spending her quality time with her family, especially her grandchildren and great-grands. 

Beloved mother of April Lands, Natalie (Bill) Adams, Harold “Ward” Mayes Jr., and Robert Patterson. Loving grandmother of Christopher Lands, Stephen Lands, and Kaitlyn Mayes. Great grandmother of Samuel & Halleigh Lands and Kinsler & Noxley Lands. 

In addition to her parents, Cyndi was preceded in death by husband: Harold W. Mayes Sr.; and siblings: Reaford Ryan, Karen Wilson, and Harviettia McHone. 

Everyone is invited to a visitation on Friday, June 28, 2024, at Rupp Funeral Home from 4 to 8 pm. The funeral service will be on Saturday, June 29, 2024 starting at 11 am at the funeral home. Officiating is Steven Jones. Burial will follow to Roselawn Memorial Park. 

Memorial donations in honor of Cyndi are suggested to the Special Olympics.
