Betty L. Westover

Betty Louise (Sims Sherzey) Westover was born on May 17, 1937 in Washington DC. She grew up in Vienna, VA and graduated from Fairfax High School. She briefly attended James Madison University then the Washington School for Secretaries. It was at her job at the Pentagon that she met Marshall Westover. Betty and Marshall were married on July 19, 1958. They had two children Curtis Westover and Terri (Teresa) Gower.
Betty was a homemaker for many years while her husband was enlisted in the Air Force. She returned to work as a receptionist at a mortgage company in Northern Virginia and worked her way up to becoming Vice President of Mortgage Lending at Washington Federal Savings and Loan. She retired in 1988 and moved with her husband to Monroe, Michigan.
After moving to Monroe, Betty was active in the Newcomers Club and worked in real estate before becoming extremely active with VFW Post 1138 Ladies Auxiliary. She served as president of the Auxiliary for several years and also served one year as the District president. Betty enjoyed sewing, crafting and cooking. In her later years she became a member of Heritage Baptist Church and regularly helped with their monthly dinners at the Salvation Army until her health no longer permitted. She also did fundraising for the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation as her oldest grandson Nathan Hays was diagnosed with CF at an early age.
Betty was preceded in death by her mother Catherine (Sherzey) Sims, her father Guy Sims, her husband Marshall Westover, and her brother Robert Sims. She is survived by her son Curtis (Aimee) Westover of Monroe, her grandson Brett Westover, her daughter Terri Gower of Monroe, her grandson Nathan Hays, sisters Barbara (Butch) Tincher of Virginia and Bonnie Siebert of Florida, as well as numerous nieces and nephews.
Family and friends may visit from 2-7pm at Rupp Funeral Home on Tuesday July 18, 2023. A service will be held that evening at 6pm by the VFW Post 1138 Ladies Auxiliary. A celebration of life will be held at 11am on Wednesday July 19, 2023 at Rupp Funeral Home, Pastor Nate Click of Heritage Baptist Church will officiate. Burial will immediately follow at Roselawn Memorial Park, LaSalle.
