Bernard B. Masserant
October 1, 1928 – November 17, 2021
Bernard Blaze Masserant, age 93, made the journey to his eternal home on November 17, 2021.
Bernard was born on October 1, 1928 to Hildegarde Wess Masserant and Blaze Masserant of Newport. He enjoyed a loving home with brothers and sisters in the Newport community. He was raised a devout Catholic and lived his faith to the fullest until he left this world. Bernard was baptized, made his first communion, and was confirmed at St Charles Church. He also served as an usher and Eucharistic minister. He and his wife Anne were members of St Charles parish for over 60 years.
His teenage years were filled with helping on their farm, playing basketball, baseball and football where he earned the nickname of “sticky fingers” as he continued to catch pass after pass. He played for the St. Charles Athletic Club.
At a St Patrick dance in 1950, Bernard met the love of his life, Anna Cable. The rest is history-they married on September 27, 1952 and started their wonderful life together. From this union came forth a son, Mark, and three daughters, Karen, Janet and Julie Anne.
Bernard worked as bookkeeper at Newport state bank after graduation. Later, he started working for C.Barron & Sons in Monroe. He was a truck driver, delivering oil and gas to the farmers and the rural areas in Newport and surrounding areas. His customers loved him, giving him the nickname, “Mr. Bernie” which was proudly painted across the front off his truck. Everyone who knew him said he never passed by a car without throwing out a friendly wave.
Bernard enjoyed playing baseball, bowling and golfing. He was a devout Michigan sports fan following Detroit Tigers, Pistons, Wolverines and Red Wings.
When the time came Bernard retired and enjoyed spending time with his wife, Anne. They traveled often enjoying Tennessee, Amish Country, Texas, Florida and many other places.
Sadly, on May 17, 2009, Bernard lost his loving wife, Anne to a long battle with cancer. He adored her and was saddened by her loss. His daughter, Karen Beyer took special care of him and made sure he felt the presence of Anne in every day and especially holidays decorating and making him his favorite meals and treats. Bernard’s son, Mark made sure his outside chores were carried out, keeping his yard perfect as Bernard was very proud of his place. He had an amazing home with a porch where he loved to sit and read his paper and say his rosaries.
Recently he was stricken by pneumonia and after a tremendous battle, passed away at home with his children at his side.
Surviving are his son, Mark Masserant and wife, Danette of Dundee, daughter, Karen Beyer and husband, Kurt of Carleton, and daughter, Janet Singer and husband, William of Bartow, Fl. Also grandchildren, Melissa Beyer, Michael Beyer, Lauren Masserant, Bernadette Bailey, and Olivia Singer. Great grandchildren- Raylee Singer, Tristan Bailey, Reece and Cade Beyer. He has surrounded by a host of lifelong close friends who made his world a better place.
