Barbara Anne “Barb” Sarkody

February 8, 1940 – August 9, 2024

Barbara Anne “Barb” Sarkody, age 84, of Monroe, passed away at 4:00 a.m. Friday, August 9, 2024 at ProMedica Monroe Regional Hospital. She had been in declining health for several years.

Born February 8, 1940, in New York, she was the daughter of the late Robert and Julia (Dyak) Sorrentino. Barb worked for the Monroe County Intermediate School District as an instructor for twenty-six years, beginning her employment the year of its inception. During her employment and after her retirement, she provided care and guardianship for several special needs children in her home, continuing until her passing. Barb was also a foster parent for the State of Michigan. She enjoyed horses, collecting stamps, antiques, and carousel figurines, and was interested in the Victorian era.

Barb was a member of the American Philatelic Society and the Red Hat Society.

To cherish her memory, Barbara leaves her daughter, Julie Evans of Monroe; special son, Bryan Rupp, who she cared for over forty years;  two granddaughters, Dawn and Rachel Evans; three great-grandchildren: Brittany (Anthony Bellestri) Evans, Justin (Haylie Rheinschmidt) Micheaux, and Jacob Micheaux; seven great-great-grandchildren: London, Madelynn, Junior, Aiden, Giovanni, Milani, and baby Myles, who is due in October; and close friends: Robbin Stokes, Chris Meyer, Faye Stromberger, Judy Rhoades, Lisa Ceilinski, and Marilyn Baumgardner.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by special son, Roger Russeau.

Family and friends may visit from 3:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. Tuesday, August 13, 2024, at Rupp Funeral Home, where services celebrating her life will begin at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, August 14, 2024. Rev. Fr. David Burgard will officiate. Interment will follow at St. Joseph Cemetery, Monroe.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions in Barbara’s memory are suggested to the Monroe County Humane Society, Paralyzed Veterans of America, or to the family.
