Joan K. Shores
February 2, 1956 – April 11, 2024
Joan Kay Shores, 68, of Monroe, Michigan, passed away on Thursday, April 11, 2024, shortly after having begun treatment for a cancer diagnosis.
Born Joni Kay Nisley in Madison, Wisconsin, as the eldest child of the late Donald and Flora (Mainzinger) Nisley, Joan graduated from Monroe High School in 1974.
Known for her creativity and work ethic, Joan excelled in crafts using a variety of mediums. After retirement, Joan was a regular at the Monroe Farmers Market, showcasing her quiltwork and supporting fellow crafters. She poured love into personalized handmade gifts for her friends and family, creating heirloom pieces with meticulous attention to detail. As a flower enthusiast, she took great care in beautifying her flower garden in the warmer seasons while making home improvement plans year-round.
Joan was profoundly insightful, intelligent, and resilient. She was all too familiar with the harsh realities of the world, but nonetheless maintained gratitude for the smallest acts of kindness, for her morning coffee, and for every contact with her grandchildren, all of whom she loved dearly.
She will be remembered for her fierce independence, incisive curiosity, realism, and sharp wit by her son Timothy Shores (Jya Langley Plavin), her direct grandchildren Leland Shores and Blue Koffron, her affinal grandchildren Minaleah Koffron and Lev William Koffron, and her brother Donald (Shonda) Nisley. She was predeceased by her father in 1972, her mother in 2017, and her sister Lori Nisley in 2000.
A private service has been held for her closest family members. Her final resting place will be in Massachusetts, near her son.
Memorial donations for those who desire are suggested to ProMedica Monroe Hospice.
