Joseph Charles 76, of Monroe, died at 7:31 p.m. Sunday at Mercy Memorial Hospital’s Emergency Room. He had been in poor health for three months.

Friends may call from 1 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Rupp Funeral Home, where the rosary will be recited at 4 p.m. He will lie instate at 9 a.m. Thursday at St. Michael Catholic Church with services at 10 a.m. Rev. Stephen Vileo, pastor of the church, will officiate. Burial will be at St. Joseph Cemetery, Monroe.

Born February 26, 1934 in Monroe, he was the son of Frank and Antoinette (Colucci) Charles. He married Antoinette E. “Toni” Balk April 15, 1961; she preceded him in death on November 18, 1999.

He worked for the City of Monroe Water Department and Michigan Gas and Utlities Company, retiring in 1990.

He served in the US Army, was a 1959 graduate of Monroe High School and a member of St. Michael Catholic Church.

He enjoyed golfing at Green Meadows Golf Course and bowling where he served as the secretary of the Independent Boewling League at Nortel Lanes for 49 years.

He is survived by a son, Joseph (Laurena) Charles II of Newport; two daughters, Lisa M. Biundo of Grosse Isle, Lori A. (Matt) Ratz of Monroe; two brothers, Dominic (Evelyn) Charles and John (Agnes) Charles both of Monroe; six grandchildren, Nunzio Biundo, Caterina Biundo, Francesca Biundo, McKenzie Ratz, Matthew Ratz II and Ashley Charles.

He is preceded in death by his parents and a son-in-law Tony Biundo.
