Lewis H. Thornburgh, age 89 of Monroe, died 3:05 p.m. Saturday at Fountain View of Monroe. Friends may call from 2 – 8 p.m. Wednesday in the Rupp Funeral Home where services will be held at 1 p.m. Thursday. Rev. Kenneth Dunn will officiate. Burial will follow at Roselawn Memorial Park, LaSalle, under the auspices of Monroe Post 1138 Veteran’s of Foreign Wars. Born April 9, 1922 in Upland, Indiana, he was the son of Arthur and Emma (Stienhelper) Thornburgh. He married Mary E. Grisell on July 23, 1943 in Salina, Kansas. Lewis proudly served his country during World War II in the United States Army. He served from December 8, 1942 to December 1, 1945 obtaining the rank of Sergeant. As a member of the 4th Infantry Division, he was stationed in Northern France, Ardennes, Rhineland, and Central Europe. He was awarded the Purple Heart, European African Middle Eastern Theater Ribbon with 4 Bronze Battle Stars, American Theater Ribbon, Victory and Good Conduct Medals. For 27 years, Lewis was an auto hauling truck driver for several companies and had previously been a self-employed farmer. After retiring in 1978 and spending many happy years in Florida, he returned to Monroe and went to work for River Raisin Apartments as a groundskeeper for approximately 5 years. Lewis was a member of First Baptist Church and VFW Post 1138 and was honored to be Grand Marshall of a recent Memorial Day Parade. He enjoyed time with his family, boating, and spending time in Florida. He is survived by his wife Mary; daughter Karen (Frank) Jay of LaSalle; son Herbert (Virginia Grimble) Thornburgh of Inkster; two brothers, Raymond of Albany, Indiana and Cledith of Hartford City, Indiana; 4 grandchildren, 5 great-grandchildren and 1 great-great-grandchild. Lewis was preceded in death by 3 brothers, Alfred, Nathan, and Jack Thornburgh; and 2 sisters, Garnet Boles and Viola Madge Nuckols.
