Joseph H. Bagnall, 89, of Onsted, formerly of Monroe, died late Saturday afternoon at Lenawee County Medical Center in Adrian. He had been in ill health for several years.
Friends may call at from 3 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the Rupp Funeral Home where services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday. The Rev. Kelly Smith of St. Mark’s Lutheran Church, Brooklyn, MI and the Rev. Joseph Adams of Fort Wayne, IN, will officiate. Burial will be at the Roselawn Memorial Park Cemetery.
Born Dec. 21, 1919, in Conneaut, Ohio, Joe was the son of Thomas and Mary Hanna (Thompson) Bagnall.
He married Mildred C. Powell of Monroe in Toledo on June 7, 1941. She died November 13, 1988. He married Betty L. (Escot) Kukral of Onsted on February 14, 1990, in Adrian.
Joe moved to Monroe in 1942 while working on The Ralph H. Watson, one of the iron ore boats that sailed the Great Lakes and for years docked at the Port of Monroe. He later worked for Monroe Steel Castings and then retired in 1983 from the former Union Camp Corporation in Monroe where he was employed as a machine operator for 32 years.
Joe also worked as the caretaker at Colonial Garden Apartments in Monroe for nearly 20 years. After retiring from Union Camp, he and his late wife, Mildred, moved to their family cottage on Middle Lake near Onsted in Lenawee County.
While in Monroe, Joe was a member of the First Baptist Church and most recently was a member of St. Mark’s Lutheran Church, Brooklyn.
He is survived by his wife, Betty; two sons, J. David (Joy) Bagnall of Monroe, James E. (Linda) Bagnall of Monroe; two step-sons, William (Nancy) Kukral of Onsted, Joseph (Stephanie) Kukral of Long Island, NY; a daughter, Sandy Bagnall of Adrian; two step-daughters, Wanda (Ralph) Saylor of Adrian, Bonnie Kukral of Adrian; 20 grandchildren and 6 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents; four brothers and seven sisters; his first wife, Mildred; a son, Robert M. Bagnall in 1993; and a step-daughter, Ida M. Dermyer of Brooklyn in 2009.
