Edward Bates, 80 of Monroe died at 5:32 a.m. Saturday in his home. He had been in failing health since May 27th. Friends may call from 12 to 8 p.m. Monday August 24, 2009 at the Rupp Funeral Home, Monroe where funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday. The Rev. Roy Southerland, pastor of Monroe Missionary Baptist Church, will officiate. Burial will be at St. Joseph Cemetery, Monroe under the auspices of Monroe Post #1138 VFW. Born January 18, 1929 in Dry Creek, Kentucky he was the son of Curtis and Christine (Hall) Bates. He married Barbara J. (Hotchkiss) Padot June 1, 2001 in Monroe. Edward served with the US Army during the Korean Conflict from February 1951 to July 1956. He worked at the Water Plant of the Ford Motor Company, Monroe as a filtration operator for 47 years, retiring in 1997. An avid golfer, he was a charter member of River Raisin Golf Club, and a member of Green Meadows Golf Club. He had been an active bowler in Monroe for many years, bowling in several leagues. He was a member of UAW Local #723, Monroe. Surviving are his wife, Barbara Padot-Bates of Monroe; two sons, Audie R. (Donna) Bates of Monroe and Jeffrey A. (Monique) Bates of Canton, Michigan; a daughter, Cheryl A. (Nicholas) U’Ran of LaSalle; two step-sons, David C. (Andrea) Padot of Saline and Timothy A. (Sheli) Padot of Winchester, Virginia; two brothers, Arthur B. (Virginia) Bates of Rock Hill, South Carolina and Elwood (El) Bates of Chilliwack, Canada; thirteen grandchildren and one great-grandson. He was preceded in death by his parents and two sisters.
