Harry E. Doederlein

January 9, 1920 – July 16, 2012

Harry E. Doederlein, age 92 of Monroe, died 11:52 p.m. Monday, July 16, 2012 at Mercy Memorial Nursing Center.  He had been seriously ill since Thursday.

Friends may call from 2 – 8 p.m. Friday at Rupp Funeral Home where the Rosary will be recited at 4:30 p.m.  He will lie instate at 10 a.m. Saturday at St. Joseph Church, Maybee.  Mass of the Resurrection will be celebrated at 11 a.m.  Rev. Fred Kalaj, Pastor of St. Joseph Church, Erie will officiate.  Burial will follow at St. Joseph Cemetery, Maybee under the auspices of Monroe Post 1138 Veterans of Foreign Wars.

Born January 9, 1920 in Sycamore, Ohio, he was the son of George and Helen (Edmonds) Doederlein.  He married Lois M. Leibold on April 28, 1945 in St. Joseph Church, Maybee.

Harry worked as a welder for twenty-five years for General Motors at their Power Train (Hydramatic) Plant in Toledo, retiring in 1982.

Harry served in the United States Army during World War II from October 9, 1941 to September 23, 1945.  He served in the Aleutian Islands earning the European-African Middle Eastern Service Medal, American Defense Service Medal, and the Good Conduct Medal.

Harry was a member of St. Joseph Church, Erie, the Holy Name Society, Michigan Council of Catholic Men, and Befrienders Group at St. Anthony’s in Hillsdale, Michigan.  He was past president of Parish Council at St. Joseph Church in Ida and past president of a diabetic support group in Hillsdale.  He was also a former member of the Frenchtown Volunteer Fire Department.

Harry is survived by his wife Lois; three sons, James (John Knecht) Doederlein of Taylor, Daniel (Dawn) Doederlein of Dearborn, and Kenneth (Janice) Doederlein of Carleton; three daughters, Connie (Gary) Kreps of Ida, Debbie (Bryan) Smith of Kalamazoo, and Anita (Tom) Watling of Monroe; a brother, Harold (Dorothy Ann) Wilcox of Finley, Ohio; 11 grandchildren and 19 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by two grandchildren, Will Doederlein and Timothy Doederlein; a great-grandchild, Kimberly Roberts; an infant sister, Mae Wilcox, and a sister, Marilyn Cook.

Memorial contributions may be made to St. Joseph Church, Erie or Capuchin Soup Kitchen, 1820 Mt. Elliott, Detroit, MI 48207.
