Sister Evangeline Nestor, IHM, 96, died Sunday, June 10, in the IHM Health Care Center, Monroe, Mich.
Sister Evangeline was one of two girls of William and Louise (Beck) Nestor. She was born on March 4, 1916, in Detroit, Mich., and given the name Evangeline. Sister Evangeline attended Holy Redeemer and All Saints Elementary Schools and graduated from All Saints High School in Detroit. She became a member of the Sisters, Servants of the Immaculate Heart of Mary, in Monroe, in 1934 taking the religious name of Sister Carmeline.
Sister Evangeline earned a bachelor’s degree from Marygrove College and master’s degree from the Villanova College, Philadelphia, Pa. She taught in formal education for 65 years at St. Michael and St. Mary Academy, Monroe: Holy Redeemer, Gesu, and St. Gregory, Detroit; St. Mark, Cleveland; Star of the Sea, Grosse Pointe; St. John, Jackson; St. Vincent and Pontiac Central, Pontiac; and Marian High School, Birmingham, Mich. For two summers, through National Science Foundation grants, Sister Evangeline studied mathematics at the Case Institute of Technology and Notre Dame University.
When Sister Evangeline began teaching at Marian High School, it was the beginning of 21 years of full-time, plus 10 years of part-time in formal teaching at the Birmingham school. During this time she was head of the Mathematics Department for many years and was senior student advisor. Sister Evangeline enjoyed piano, singing, square dancing and reading. She retired to the Motherhouse in Monroe in 2002 and entered the Health Care Center in 2006 where she resided until her death.
Sister Evangeline is survived by her nieces and nephews.
Visitation will be held at the IHM Motherhouse, 610 W. Elm Avenue, Monroe, on Thursday, June 14 from 2 until 7:30 p.m. with a Remembering at 3 p.m. The Mass of the Resurrection will be celebrated in the Chapel on Friday, June 15, at 10 a.m. with Fr. Bob Singelyn as presider. Burial will follow in St. Mary Cemetery on the Motherhouse Campus. Funeral arrangements are under the direction of the Rupp Funeral Home, Monroe, Mich.
