Thomas E. “Sonny” McGowen, 74 of Newport died at 6:30 a.m. Friday at his home he had been in poor health since 1992. Friends may call from 2 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the Rupp Funeral Home where services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday with military honors by VFW Post 1138 Monroe; burial will be at Great Lakes National Cemetery, Holly, Michigan. Born June 9, 1934 in Murfreesboro, Tennessee he was the son of Thomas E. and Betty E. (Mosley) McGowen. He was employed as a truck driver by Georgia Pacific for twenty years and served in the US Army National Guard from January 14, 1952 to August 28, 1954. Sonny enjoyed being with his family and friends at Flat Rock and Toledo Speedways. Surviving are his children Gary T. (Beverly) McGowen of Corbin, Kentucky; Michael E. (Sharon) McGowen of Bowling Green, Kentucky; Pamela R. (Duke) Hammonds of Barboursville, Kentucky and Annette M. (William) Meade of Newport; sisters; Lavone (Earl) Meade of LaFollette, Tennessee and Sarah Bailey of Indiana; eleven grandchildren and twelve great grandchildren.
