Clayton C. Elrod

Clayton C. Elrod, 91, of Monroe died at 10:45 p.m. Sunday at Mercy Memorial Hospital, Monroe.

Friends may call from 1 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Rupp Funeral Home, where St. Anne’s Men’s Club will recite the rosary at 7 p.m. He will lie instate at 10 a.m. Thursday at St. Anne’s Catholic Church with services at 11 a.m. Rev. Robert Mossett, pastor of the church, will officiate. Burial will be in St. Joseph Cemetery, Maybee with VFW Post 1138, Monroe, providing military honors.

Born February 3, 1919 in Tazewell, Tennessee he was the son of Charlie and Hattie (Epperson) Elrod. He married Mary E. Horney on September 6, 1954 at St. Anne’s Catholic Church; she preceded him in death on December 31, 1998.

He was employed at River Raisin Paper Company, Midwest Trucking and the DT&I Railroad retiring in 1982.

He served in the US Army from December 11, 1940 to January 7, 1945 and received the Victory Ribbon, Good Conduct Medal, American Theater Ribbon, American Defense Service Ribbon and the Bronze Star.

An active member of St. Anne’s Catholic Church and Men’s Club, he also helped start St. Anne’s Food Closet. He was a member of VFW Post 1138, Monroe and the Knights of Columbus #1266, Monroe. He was a 1938 graduate of Claiborne High School.

He is survived by two sons, Joseph L. Elrod of San Clemente and Robert L. (Lauri) Elrod of Glendale, Arizona; two daughters, Anne M. (Greg) Goins and Kathryn L. (Richard) Bezeau both of Monroe; nine grandchildren, Michelle (Michael) Zabriskie, Jeffrey (Becky) Goins, Nick (Stacey) Goins, Levi Elrod, Kyle Simpson, Grace Elrod, Rachel Elrod, Chad Bezeau, Derek Bezeau and six great grandchildren.

In addition to his wife, he is preceded in death by two brothers, Oscar and Buster Elrod; four sisters, Lilly Cox, Ida Jackson, Bobbie Patterson and Monette Girard.

Memorial contributions may be made to St. Anne’s Food Closet or Mercy Memorial Hospice of Monroe.
